Our Story

   "A Sense of Place"

"A wine collection inspired by fine Spanish winemakers, rooted in the heights of the Levante region"

The Bobal.co.il wine collection shows QUALITY, CHARACTER & INDIVIDUALITY. The target is to offer handcrafted wines with care, passion and respect for the natural quality of the fruit.

THE PEOPLE. The growers and winemakers are passionate, dedicated and devoted to express terroir through organic viticulture and minimum intervention winemaking, to provide maximum expression of terroir, typicity of the grape varieties and a sense of place.

THE PLACE. The DOP Utiel-Requena region reveals a Spain unfamiliar to many, yet it represents the oldest archaeological winemaking area in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. Soils are poor, the Mediterranean flora is varied, and the altitude is high (700-900m). This is a meeting place between Mediterranean sea breezes and dry winds coming from the La Mancha Plateau. The ancestral vineyards follows a strict rainfed method and are planted with old bush vines (many ungrafted).

DO CAVA de Requena region, is the highest elevation of DO CAVA in Spain. It is part of the local history, tradition & culture of our region and is known for a particularly high quality Cava Reserva, made by the Traditional Method and aged on its tirage yeast for a minimum of 18 months.

The Macabeo plots for CAVA are in "La Vega", by the shore of the Magro River, where the soils are reddish clay.

THE VARIETIES. This is the Land of Bobal. It is where the Bobal variety thrives and it is the region with the finest and most unique wines of this variety. It is also the region of Macabeo, providing fresh whites and the base wine for the local CAVA Sparkling Wine. Other indigenous white varieties: Tardana, Merseguera, Parellada and Xarel-lo.

Other varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

THE WINES. Viña Memorias, a small family winery, is the guardian of the old vine vineyards, the Bobal variety and the ultimate representative of the region. It was founded in 2016 in the spirit of preserving their family heritage and re-writing the modern history of the wines of their Protected Designation.

Dominio de la Vega is a family winery with a distinctive pioneering profile that has marked an era in the production of quality wines in the region (production of Cava in the area started in 1982). Committed to the land, the winery is located among vineyards in the Casa-Bodega built by Conde Ferrer de Plegamans in the early XVIIIth century. The old underground "trullos" and reservoirs are currently used as cellars which are still a place of soft light and tranquility.

Bobal Grape Vareity

The Bobal grape variety is the rising star of the D.O.P. Utiel-Requena region from where it originates. This high terroir located in the interior region of Valencia has a unique combination of conditions which bring out the best of the Bobal grape and have led Utiel-Requena to become a Denominación de Origen Protegida.

The Bobal produces deep and elegant aromas in the nose and even after oak aging, it maintains its intense violaceous red color. You will also enjoy flavors of velvety dark fruit, a good acidity with chewy tannins and moderate levels of alcohol. In the skin of the Bobal grape, we also find high levels of acidity as well as a high concentration of flavonoids (powerful antioxidants, with anti-inflammatory characteristics that help the immune system) and resveratrol (a natural polyphenol that acts like antioxidant), both known for their potential health benefits (against cancer and heart disease) which are present in our wine.

Macabeo Grape Vareity

Macabeo grape variety, also known as Viura, is a native Spanish grape which finds its highest expression in the high terroir of D.O.P. Utiel-Requena, gently buffeted by fresh breezes from the Mediterranean and warmed by the continental dry climate of La Mancha.

Macabeo thrives in hot and dry Mediterranean climates. It buds late which makes it less likely to be harmed by frost. With balanced acidity and impressive aromatics, Macabeo naturally abundant in glycerin is widely used to make fresh, crisp dry, young white wines with beautiful fruit flavors and is ideal for pairing with fish.

Is said to owe its name to the Biblical tribe of the Maccabees.
